Access to services at The Sandringham Practice/ Covid19

Over the last few months we had to rapidly change the way in which patients accessed our services. We have been here in surgery working throughout, but in quite a different way. We would like to thank our patients who have been brilliant and adapted really well to these changes and apologise for any delay that may have been caused trying to contact the Surgery by telephone, this has been a very difficult time for everybody and we appreciate your understanding during this time.

We are now at the stage where we are learning how to best respond to patients needs while continuing to keep everyone as safe as possible.

We are delivering 95% of our services, however, some of these have changed to remote services using telephone and video consultations. If a clinician feels they need to see you, the clinician will provide you with a time to attend and see you face to face. We request that you attend on time wearing a suitable face covering and alone where possible. This will help us minimise the footfall keeping you as safe as possible during your visit with us.

We apologise that we have not yet been able to open our doors fully at this time and hope that you understand we are trying to keep all services who share the building as safe as possible. We can assure you if you need to be seen face to face with a clinician you will be.

The way in which general practice operates is unlikely to ever completely go back to how things were ‘before-covid’. We realise that this is a big change for many of our patients and will take some getting used to by all of us, but we really want to stress that we are very much ‘open for business’; please do not delay contacting us if you feel you need to speak to someone about a medical problem.

There has been extensive work across Doncaster to help patients access care and treatment effectively and efficiently, and a GP Surgery may not always be necessary, please follow our The Sandringham Practice and NHS Doncaster CCG Facebook page for up to date information on choosing the right service.

We are actively recalling patients on disease management registers to undertake their annual reviews. It is important that you attend these appointments so we can ensure we are providing you with high quality care and follow on management plans.

As the flu season is upon us we strongly urge all patients over 18 who are considered high risk or over 65 to book an appointment into one of our designated flu clinics. We have now got a separate telephone line to deal with these specific appointments 01302 986111, this line is available Monday to Friday between 9am and 2pm.

Gentle reminder: If you no longer require your booked appointment please be courteous and cancel so that another patient requiring medical help can utilise the appointment you no longer require.

Please, please only attend A&E if you have a medical emergency. This is not a service for minor presenting ailments.

Appointments with the Doctor or Nurse

Extended Access Surgeries

An appointment is normally given for ten minutes and is intended for one problem only, but if you feel that your problem requires more time please ask the receptionist for a longer appointment. At times of heavy demand certain surgeries may have shorter slots but you will be informed of this when booking.

We are increasingly seeing the presentation of multiple, unrelated issues which cannot be effectively dealt within the time allowed.

In order to try and ensure all of our appointments run as close to time as possible, please can you try and set out the issue you wish to raise at the beginning of the consultation and if you do have other conditions you wish to discuss, to make a further appointment please.

Your doctor should be able to guide you further where necessary.

We try to offer an appointment with the doctor of your choice, but sometimes this may not be possible at a time convenient to you and especially at short notice.

Named GP 

All patients have a named GP as part of a care plan, this does not necessarily mean they have to see that specific GP every time they visit the practice. Patients may be required to visit for a check up if they have not attended practice for a long period of time, patients also have the choice of seeing a preferred clinician, and we endeavour to make this possible where practicable dependent on appointment type.

Emergency & Urgent Appointments

Please provide our receptionists with clear and concise information concerning your medical condition. Our experiences triage nurses will telephone you back in order to assess your medical needs and take appropriate action for you over the telephone which may involve a doctor calling you back or making an appointment with a nurse or doctor. These emergency appointments are for clinically urgent problems only. We do have a duty doctor each day who is responsible for any clinically urgent issues arising.

If more than one member of the family needs to be seen, please book a separate appointment for each.

To Speak To a Doctor

Please telephone after 9.30 unless urgent; routine, non-time critical matters may be referred on to a named doctor for their next working day and you may be offered a telephone appointment with a doctor if appropriate. Please be aware there may be times when your requested doctor is not available due to other commitments or leave. More urgent matters will be referred to one of the other doctors to ensure the message is responded to in a timely manner.

Practice Nurse Appointments

The practice nurses are available every weekday between 8.30am - 6.00pm by appointment only.

Health Checks

As directed under our new contract on the 1st April 2004, registered patient who are between the ages of 16 and 75 years who have not been seen in the previous three years may request a consultation for a health check. Similarly patients aged 75 years and over who have not had a health check in the previous twelve months may make an appointment for same. This will be a nurse consultation.

When Requesting Appointments Patients Can Help By:

  • Non-urgent appointments can be booked a week in advance.
  • Being flexible when accepting appointment days and times.
  • Letting the Surgery know as soon as possible if you are unable to keep an appointment or no longer need it in order that it may be given to another Patient.
  • Being patient if the doctor is delayed - it could be you who needs extra time on another day.
  • Understanding that receptionists only carry out doctors’ instructions regarding appointment times and availability.

Cancellations

If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason please inform us as soon as possible in order for us to give the slot to someone else.
